Gentle Dental Cleanings
Brushing and flossing every day are essential habits for preventing oral health issues like cavities and gum disease. However, they are only a part of the equation. Even if you brush and floss regularly, issues can still arise. To help you maintain optimal oral health, it is also important to have your teeth professionally cleaned. At Mettler & Griego Family Dentistry, we provide gentle dental cleanings to help you maintain the health of your mouth.
Why Are Cleanings So Important?
While brushing and flossing are incredibly important, there are some areas of your mouth that can be more difficult to clean than others. Even if you brush and floss every day, these areas can collect plaque and bacteria, which can then contribute to issues like cavities and gum disease. The American Dental Association recommends having your teeth professionally cleaned at least twice a year, or once every six months. With professional cleanings, we can thoroughly clean every surface of your teeth. We can even get rid of stubborn tartar, or calcified tartar that cannot be eliminated with a toothbrush and floss. By eliminating all buildup from your teeth, we can help you prevent serious oral health issues, keeping your mouth happy and healthy.
Your Dental Cleaning
Dental cleanings are fairly simple, straightforward procedures. We begin with a thorough scraping of your teeth. We clean all surfaces of your teeth, including along and just below the gum line. We work to eliminate all plaque, tartar, bacteria, and other debris.
After your teeth have been scraped clean, they are then polished. To polish your teeth, we use an electric handpiece with a rotating head and a special dental polish that contains abrasives. The head of the electric handpiece spins rapidly, which allows the abrasives to scrub the surfaces of your teeth, leaving them smooth, shining, and feeling clean.
The last step of your dental cleaning is flossing. We use floss to clean between your teeth, eliminating plaque and bacteria from these difficult to clean areas. Flossing also aids in getting rid of loose debris and dental polish that has accumulated during your cleaning. If necessary, we can complete your cleaning with a fluoride treatment.
