Dental exams are essential for keeping your mouth and smile healthy and beautiful. Routine exams enable us to spot issues in the early stages of development before symptoms even begin to show. If symptoms have begun appearing, exams give us the ability to provide you with an accurate diagnosis of your specific issues so that we can then provide you with an effective treatment plan. As a part of your exam, we need to take a close look at the visible structures within your mouth. However, some areas of your mouth are more difficult to see than others. At Mettler & Griego Family Dentistry, we can take a close look at all visible components of your mouth with an intraoral camera.
What Is an Intraoral Camera?
An intraoral camera is a handheld device that allows us to take a look at the visible structures, including the spaces that are more difficult to view. The intraoral camera is approximately the size of a large pen. One end has a small optical camera on it. On the other end, the intraoral camera is attached to a computer. As we wave the camera around in your mouth, we can see your mouth on a computer monitor in real-time. The camera also allows us to capture stills, which then enable us to spend more time focusing on a specific area of your mouth without you needing to keep your mouth open for extended periods of time.
More Thorough Oral Exams
After capturing an image, we can use software that enables us to look more closely at the picture. We can zoom in on targeted areas of the image and enhance it for greater clarity. These features and more allow us to see the smallest details of your mouth, which we might not otherwise be able to see. We can more accurately diagnose a variety of different oral health issues and provide you with much more effective treatment plans.
Take a Unique Look Inside Your Mouth
Your view of your mouth is rather limited. With the intraoral camera, you can see exactly what we see, all displayed right on the computer monitor. Because you can see inside your mouth, you are better able to understand your diagnosis, as well as the severity of the situation, and the need for certain treatments. Patients with anxiety can see exactly what is being done inside their mouths, which can help to alleviate nervousness and uneasiness.
Improving the Quality of Your Dental Visits
Dental files are stored on the computer. This includes any digital images that are taken, including X-rays and images we take with the intraoral camera. With digital storage, there is a significantly lower risk of your images getting lost or ruined. Digitally storing your images eliminates the need to dig through a paper file, keeping your appointment focused on what is most important.
Become More Active in Your Oral Care
The images we take with the intraoral camera can be printed out so that you can take them home with you. These images provide you with a reference point, showing you what to look for in your mouth. As soon as you notice any changes, you can then call us right away. The sooner changes are noticed, the faster treatments can be provided, preventing more significant issues from developing.
